Houston’s “Virtual” Iftar 2020 

On Saturday, May 9th, 2020, Houston held a virtual Iftar. The sharing of the meals and food pick-up followed strict social distancing safety rules and regulations.

 

Each year, Houston’s Iftar dinner has grown – this year, they hosted 2000 people. Mohammad Sheikh, the President of the Houston-Karachi Sister City Association has organized the event for a number of years. Other Islamic SCAs besides Karachi are Abu Dhabi, Baku, Basrah, and Istanbul.

This is a free and open event for Houston’s diverse community of all religions and ethnicities, creating an open and inclusive space to partake in cultural exchanges. 

 

Houston’s Mayor Sylvester Turner was the Keynote speaker, in addition to other government leaders and Islamic scholars who spoke at this virtual Iftar. Several television and streaming sites carried the speeches and are available to view on YouTube.
